Premio Especial Brain Film Fest Award

Isabel Coixet

The Premi Especial Brain Film Fest Award, presented for the second consecutive year to a relevant person whose work has contributed to the visibility of issues associated with the brain, will this year be awarded to the filmmaker Isabel Coixet. This Catalan director’s career began in the late 1980s and she still remains at the top of her game. She has dealt with the subject of trauma and post-trauma in a precise, delicate and respectful manner in many of her films, including Things I Never Told You (1996), My Life Without Me (2003), the documentary Viaje al corazón de la tortura (2003) and The Secret Life of Words (2005), and more recently the documentary El sostre groc and the miniseries Cuidarnos entre nosotros nos hace humano (2022).

Isabel Coixet is distinguished not only for her personal style of storytelling, but also for her commitment and ability to immerse viewers to empathies with her characters, accompanying them in their emotions, anguish and conflicts. Her work triggers discussion about who we are, both individually and collectively, as can be seen in her latest film, El sostre groc – winner of a Gaudí Award and nominated for a Goya – which elegantly and forcefully examines the issues of sexual abuse, trauma and gender inequality.
